Woolly Bear Moth

$75.00

This framed painting is roughly 3.5x3 inches in size. It was made using graphite, colored pencil, ink, gouache and watercolor paint.

The Woolly Bear Moth can be found across the Pacific Northwest. The fuzzy caterpillar is in the tiger moth sub-family, Arctiinae, and also called the Isabella tiger moth. Arctiinae is from the Greek word, meaning bear for hairiness. Arctiinae are noted for their bright colors. They range in color from nearly white to yellow and even a butterscotch. As caterpillars they can withstand -90 degrees Fahrenheit by making an “antifreeze” glycerol that keeps their cells from freezing. As moth’s they are said to predict the winter- but that has been recently debunked by scientists.
