Deer Skull and Flora

This framed painting is 10x10 inches in size. It was made using graphite, colored pencil, ink, gouache and watercolor paint.

The focal point of this composition is a deer skull. Surrounding the skull is ceanothus silk moth, banana slug and hypholoma capnoides mushrooms (conifer tuft).

The ceanothus silk moth reaches 5 inches in wingspan and range from brown to red in color. They resides only on the northern west coast of North America and prefer conifer forests and coastal climates.

The banana slug can reach up to 10 inches in length and colors range from bright yellow, greenish, brown and black to white. The colors vary with age, diet, moister and light. Habitat included PNW forests and gardens. This slug is the second largest slug in the world.

Hypholoma capnoides mushrooms (conifer tuft) have bright orange tops in wet weather and dry out and become pale orange-brown. They reach nearly 4 inches in height and 3 inches in width. They prefer conifer logs and dense forests as their habitat. Hypholoma, the genus name, means 'mushrooms with threads'
