Northern Alligator Lizard and European Skipper

$98.00

This framed painting is roughly 4x6 inches in size. It was made using graphite, colored pencil, ink, gouache and watercolor paint.

The focal point of this composition is the Northern Alligator Lizard. This lizard is native to the Pacific Northwest but also lives as far south as California- enjoying dry forests, stream sides, grasslands and even mountains.. It can get up to 11 inches in length and ranges in color from mottled grey/green to brown with a light grey stomach. It’s species name, coerulea, means ’bluish’.

In the foreground of this painting are tiny mushrooms called swamp beacons (also known as matchstick fungi). They can get up to 1.5 inches tall and tend to grow in murky marsh on decaying forest vegetation.

Behind and above the lizard, clinging to a fern is a European skipper. It has a wingspan of up to 1/2 an inch and its wings color can range from brown to orange. The species name, lineal, is Latin for ‘small line’.
